Japan disappointed after FIFA names Qatar as 2022 World Cup host

Representatives of the Japanese soccer community and fans were left disappointed following the announcement of Qatar as the host nation of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Some 50 Japanese soccer officials clad in the national team’s “Samurai Blue” uniform, including Japan Football Association (JFA) Vice Chairman Kuniya Daini and J. League Chairman Kazumi Ohigashi, gathered in front of a large TV in a hall at JFA headquarters in Tokyo on Dec. 2 to watch the announcement live from Switzerland’s Zurich.
When Japan’s defeat in the bidding race was reported, the audience in the hall expressed exclamations of surprise and discouragement, while a Qatar-based satellite TV crew visiting the hall shed tears of joy.
