Qatar forward Hussein Yasser feels that AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™ hosts cannot be written off despite crashing to a 2-0 defeat against Uzbekistan in their opening game of the tournament on Friday.

Second-half goals by Odil Akhmedov and Server Djeparov condemned Bruno Metsu’s side to a defeat at the Khalifa Stadium which seriously jeopardizes their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

But Yasser still believes that Al Annabi (the Maroon) can advance from Group A
despite being generally outplayed by the Central Asians in front of a near-capacity home crowd.

“We have to forget about today because we cannot replay the match,” said the 26-year-old Zamalek player (pictured).

“We still have matches against China and Kuwait so we still have two chances to qualify.

“It’s not impossible but it’s going to be difficult to go through. As we could see at the World Cup, Spain lost their first game and still won the tournament. So nothing is impossible in football but we have to perform better of course.

“I hope that we can forget about today because we have now to mentally recover for our game against China.”

Yasser accepted that he and his teammates just failed to perform on the day.

“I don’t want to make any excuses for why we lost. I think that the players felt the pressure of responsibility but we had to perform.

“I’m one of the players that didn’t really perform at 100 per cent. Maybe the pressure was on us more than Uzbekistan but we had good chances in the first half but in the second half we didn’t have control and they got their goals.”

Qatarwill be hoping to kick-start their Asian Cup campaign when they take on China on Wednesday at the Khalifa Stadium.
