The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Mohamed Bin Hammam has stated that prize money will be a new feature of the Asian Cup starting from the 2015 edition of the tournament.
In the 15 Asian Cups held so far, including the present one, the AFC have never awarded cash prizes to any of the winners.
“Our revenues are very limited and is hardly supporting our development programmes and our competition organizing expenses. In 2002, for AFC the expenses from A-Z club competitions was only US$200, 000 (££126,000) which was also for prize money," he said.
“Today the club comp is costing US$27m (£17m) per year and something like US$5m (£3.1m) for prize money in general. I can actually see from our expectation for revenue for the coming cycle.
“There will be prize money for which we are planning and I presume that in 2015, we can allocate US$10m (£6.3m) for the prize winners – first, second and third."
